How to Fix Slime Deflation — Guide
Slime, the squishy and satisfying toy that has captivated both children and adults alike, is a simple concoction of glue and water. Its high moisture content, which is responsible for its unique texture and stretchability, also makes it susceptible to deflation over time, especially with extended play.
Understanding Slime Deflation:
Slime is primarily made from glue and water, ingredients that give it its stretchy and malleable properties.
However, these same properties also mean that slime can lose its volume and elasticity over time. This is especially true for clay-based slimes (memoryDOUGH, butter, ice-cream textures), which may deflate more significantly due to the nature of clay.
The moisture in the slime evaporates, and the clay compounds may compact, leading to a decrease in size and a change in texture.
Preventing Slime Deflation:
The key to extending the life of your slime lies in proper handling and storage. We recommend playing with our slimes out of the jar for 15-30 minutes at a time. This ideal playtime helps maintain the slime's moisture level and longevity. After play, ensure the slime is tightly sealed in its jar. Exposure to air accelerates the evaporation process, so airtight storage is crucial for keeping your slime in tip-top shape.
Fixing Deflated Slime:
If you notice your slime starting to deflate, don't worry—there are several ways to breathe new life into it:
- Adding Moisture: A small amount of water or lotion can help rejuvenate the slime by reintroducing moisture. Be careful to add these ingredients gradually, mixing thoroughly after each addition, until the desired consistency is achieved.
- Restoring Elasticity: To bring your slime back to its original size and texture, adding small amounts of school liquid glue and an activator (borax solution) can be effective. This method does come with a caveat; it may alter the texture of your slime, so proceed with caution.
Knowing When to Let Go: If your slime has deflated to about half its original size and lacks stretchability, it may be time to retire it. While it can be hard to say goodbye, this is an opportunity to explore our latest slime products, perhaps in colors or textures you haven't tried before.
